Saints Louis & Zelie Martin
Feast day: July 12
Saint Louis Martin and Saint Zelie Martin are the parents of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Zélie wanted to become a nun but was turned away by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul due to respiratory difficulties and recurrent headaches. Zélie then prayed for God to give her children that would be consecrated to God. She fell in love and married Louis Martin. They had nine children, though only five daughters would survive childhood and all five became nuns.

when it comes to the dating outside the faith conversation, which has circled around a few times in the last couple months, I think there are a couple points it helps to remember:
1 Corinthians 7:12-16! Paul tells us there is a mystery of grace in marriage by which an unbelieving spouse may be saved!! it’s not guaranteed, but it’s a beautiful possibility to hope for! he was speaking largely about people who had become Christians after marriage, but the point still stands. if this is what Scripture tells us, we don’t gain anything by trying to be more pious than Scripture.
when it comes to married Saints, Zelie and Louis Martin, who were both equally enthusiastic about Jesus when they got married, are the exception. our most well-known married Saints were married to someone who was either not a believer at all or not a fervent believer. look at St Frances of Rome and St Elizabeth of Hungary and St Monica and St Rita! saints are examples of heroic virtue, going above and beyond what is usually possible, so we don’t have to emulate their extremism in every way. but it would be a mistake to think that marriage to someone less religious is inherently bad or unholy. again. we don’t gain anything by trying to be more pious than the saints.
and my own personal take: what makes a good partner is not necessarily piety or “practice” of religion, but openness. somebody who really lives for others and keeps their commitments and recognizes good where they find it, even if they don’t practice a religion (right now), might very well be a better spouse than someone who lives for themselves, flakes out every time responsibility rears its head, and is blind to everything in the world but their petty inconveniences and sufferings, even if that person goes to church on Sundays. that’s because worldview is more than just skin deep! the first person might be far more capable of appreciating your faith as a good and beautiful thing than the second person, because the second person is gonna balk every time you try to nudge them to give more or try harder. and that is actually the litmus test: whether your significant other sees your faith as a good thing, something that they love about you, or whether they see it as an annoying inconvenience.
it’s fine to say that personally you don’t think you’d like to marry someone who doesn’t share your beliefs. healthy and prudent, even. but it’s not okay to say that someone who marries outside the faith is less Christian or less holy for it.
#and also…never say never. who knows what the Lord has planned for you! set the checklist aside and leave room to be surprised#I’m not blogging against anybody in particular I’m just adding my two cents :)#cate writes

Inspired by @apenitentialprayer I've decided to choose a "patron" saint to focus on and learn from this liturgical year as I get closer to RCIA. I actually cheated a bit and chose two saints, Louis and Zelie Martin! I had never heard of them and was struck by their devotion to each other, their children, and their God. They are the only couple canonized together and are the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux.
If you aren't familiar with them I highly suggest reading a bit about their lives!

THE PARENTS OF ST. THERESE: SS. LOUIS AND ZELIE MARTIN On October 19, 2008, in Lisieux, France, Louis Martin and Marie Azélie Guerin, the parents of St. Thérèse, were declared “Blessed.” Seven years later, on October 18, 2015, they were canonized. It was only the second time in history that a married couple had been beatified. It is the first time that a married couple was canonized as a couple. Here are excerpts from their biographies, read during the beatification ceremony, as well as details about the beatification and their canonization. Louis Martin was born into a military family in Bordeaux, France, on August 22, 1823, and spent his early years at various French military posts. At the end of his studies, he didn’t turn towards a military career like his father, but chose to study watchmaking. However, in 1845, at the age of twenty-two, being a man of faith and prayer, Louis went to the Swiss Alps in hopes of entering a Carthusian monastery. However, he was told he couldn’t enter until he learned Latin. Disappointed, Louis went to Alençon to study Latin but was unable to grasp it. In his journal, he wrote, "I have sold my French-Latin Dictionary…" He just gave up. Whatever the full story, basically he realized that he did not have a vocation to the priesthood. He returned to watchmaking, dedicating himself to his work. Marie-Azélie (Zélie) Guerin was also born into a military family at Gandelain, France, on December 23, 1831. When her father retired in 1844, the family moved to Alençon. Zélie studied under the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and received training as a lacemaker. She made the famous Pointe d’Alençon, and was eventually in charge of sales for her own lacemaking business. Like her sister, Marie-Louise Guerin, who was a nun at the Visitation convent in Le Mans, Zélie wanted to consecrate herself to the Lord as a nun. She met with the Superior of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul but was turned away due to respiratory difficulties and recurrent headaches. Their marriage was celebrated at Midnight on July 13, 1858, in Notre-Dame d’Alençon, when Louis was 35 and Zélie, 27. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf6hd8YrZLA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
